Multiplication & Division
“Multiplication is fast adding; division is fair sharing.”
The hook
3 bags of candy, 4 in each. Multiplication tells you the total without counting one by one.
In plain words
Multiplication is adding the same number many times; division is sharing equally or counting how many groups.
The intuition
3 × 4 means 4 added 3 times = 4+4+4 = 12. Going back, 12 ÷ 4 asks 'how many groups of 4 in 12?' or 'share 12 among 4, how many each?' Multiply and divide undo each other.
How it's built
In multiplication: how many groups and how big each group is. Division starts from the total and one side to find the other. So 12 ÷ 4 = 3, and you can check with 3 × 4 = 12.
Example
Share 12 candies among 4 friends: each gets 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Check: 3 × 4 = 12.
Common mistake
Division is not something you can flip: 12 ÷ 4 and 4 ÷ 12 are completely different. But multiplication can be flipped: 3×4 = 4×3.
Where it's used
Total cost (count × price), sharing fairly, and the base for finding area and volume.
Where it came from
Times tables are ancient tools; many early civilizations left multiplication tables on clay and bamboo.
Quick check
Share 12 candies equally among 4 friends. How many does each get?
- 2
- 3✓
- 4
- 6
Practice
Find 7 × 8.
Answer: 56
- Add 7 eight times, or use the times table
- 7 × 8 = 56
Takeaway: Multiplication repeats the same number.
Find 24 ÷ 6.
Answer: 4
- 6 times what makes 24? 6 × 4 = 24
- → 24 ÷ 6 = 4
Takeaway: Check division with multiplication.
Share 15 colored pencils among 3 people. How many each?
Answer: 5
- 15 ÷ 3 = 5
- Check: 5 × 3 = 15
Takeaway: Sharing equally is division.
